In Suncheon, South Korea, a high-profile "unprovoked" stabbing murder occurred on September 26, 2024. The perpetrator, Park Dae-sung (30), was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2025 for the killing of an 18-year-old high school student.
The Crime
- Incident: Park followed the victim for approximately 800 meters through Jorye-dong before stabbing her multiple times from behind around 12:44 a.m..
- Victim: An 18-year-old student who was walking home after seeing off a friend. She was taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
- Motive: Described as a "don't ask" or random killing; Park had no prior relationship with the victim. He later claimed he was heavily intoxicated and did not remember the event.
- Aftermath: CCTV footage captured Park smiling as he fled the scene. He continued to wander the streets with a weapon for two hours, visiting bars and karaoke rooms, before being arrested around 3 a.m. following an altercation with another pedestrian.
Legal Outcome
- Sentencing: The Gwangju District Court sentenced Park to life imprisonment in January 2025.
- Final Ruling: In September 2025, the Supreme Court of South Korea upheld the life sentence, rejecting Park's appeal that the sentence was excessive and his claim of mental impairment due to alcohol.
- Additional Penalties: He was ordered to wear an electronic tracking device for 20 years and is prohibited from consuming alcohol above a 0.03% blood alcohol concentration.
